When the walls come down, life begins to grow

After the death of her parents, young Mary Lennox is sent from India to live with her reclusive uncle in a vast Yorkshire manor filled with locked doors and unspoken grief. Angry, lonely, and convinced she is unwanted, Mary begins to explore her strange new world — and in doing so uncovers a long-forgotten garden hidden behind ivy-covered walls.
As Mary slowly brings the garden back to life, she forms unexpected friendships with the warm-hearted Martha, the gentle animal-loving Dickon, and her sickly cousin Colin, who has been hidden away from the world. Together, they discover that healing can come from fresh air, hard work, and human connection.
This intimate studio production of The Secret Garden brings Frances Hodgson Burnett’s much-loved story to the stage, exploring how compassion, imagination, and hope can transform even the most wounded hearts.

But can a garden really change a life?

This stage adaptation by Elizabeth Newman captures the essence of the book, and it is brought to life with our joint production between Maskers and the youth of Light UP drama!

Director & Cast

The Director of this production is Courtney Fayle
Courtney discovered her passion for acting and directing at a young age, spending nearly every family holiday forcing her siblings and cousins to learn Disney musical numbers. Now, many years later, she gets to do it for a living and with willing participants! After graduating from University of Wisconsin-Whitewater with a BFA in Theatre Management and Promotions, Courtney was made the Managing Director of SouthWisco KidStage for 3 years before moving to England in 2014 and becoming a freelance drama facilitator with a variety of different youth theatre programmes. That work eventually led her to Light UP where she's been for the last 11 years and is now serving as the charity's Executive Director. Over the past 15 years of directing youth theatre, there are lots of standout productions but one of the greatest joys has been creating a strong collaborative partnership with Maskers who are aligned in our mission of fostering a supportive environment for young performers and technicians to build confidence, develop a varied skillset and form lasting friendships through the arts. Among her many producing and directing credits, is the 2023 co-production of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe which was our first time joining forces with Maskers and we can't wait to do it again as we head into The Secret Garden.
