Anouilh has written some forty or more plays and is generally recognised to be a master of his trade in respect of presentation of character, dialogue and construction, but when La Valse des Toreadors was first put on in 1952 it was criticised for being a mixture of comedy and farce at one extreme, and drama bordering on melodrama and tragedy at the other.
