When Rebecca was published in 1938 Daphne du Maurier suddenly found herself to have become one of the most popular writers of the day. Rebecca has been translated into more than twenty languages and was made into a film directed by Alfred Hitchcock and starring Laurence Olivier.

Daphne du Maurier had begun writing In 1928. Her first novel, The Loving Spirit was published in 1931, since when she has written plays, short stories and biographies as well as her best-selling novels.

She was born In London in 1907, daughter to the famous actor and theatre manager-producer, Sir Gerald du Maurier and grand-daughter to Punch artist and author George du Maurier. However, she soon discovered the rugged beauty of Cornwall and made her home there.

In 1969, Daphne du Maurier was made a D.B.E.. She is the widow of Lieutenant-General Sir Frederick Browning, K.C.V.O., D.S.O., wartime commander of Airbourne Forces and Chief-of-Staff to Earl Mountbatten in S. E. A. C.  She has two daughters and a son, and seven grandchildren.

Although she has many spell-binding novels to her credit, Rebecca with its mystery and suspense is thought by most to be her masterpiece.
