Pre-show publicity from the Southampton Evening Echo

The Maskers, Southampton's busiest amateur dramatic society, are staging the stage version of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic at the Nuffield Theatre from Tuesday evening. Graham Buchanan is directing. His first and only other production for the Maskers was 'The Taming of the Shrew'. Coincidentally, that was at the time Chichester were performing 'The Shrew' and, of course their production 'Treasure Island' is running now.

It's not the most popular play for an amateur society, despite its exciting narrative -- for there's only one part for the fairer sex, that of Mrs Hawkins, young Jim's mother. In Graham's production Mollie Manns takes the part. Hailing originally from the West Country, she should have no trouble with the accent.

James Smith returns to the stage for the terrifying role of Blind Pew. David Pike has the part of Long John Silver and is currently getting to know his parrot. His sparring partner from 'Inherit the Wind' and 'Take a Pair of Sparklin' Guys' Ken Spencer plays that old soak Billy Bones. And Martin Stannard, Ron Stannard's 13 year old son, is Jim Hawkins.
