ANZAC DAY: April 25, 1915. Australian and New Zealand troops landed in a small cove on the Gallipoli Peninsula at dawn. Object: to storm the Dardanelles with other British forces and eventually take Constantinople. Outnumbered by Turkish soldiers in good positions and suffering enormous losses, the Anzacs somehow managed to establish a position, but were unable to advance. The day is commemorated annually throughout Australia by rememberance services and parades by veterans of both wars. A dwindling minority of these use the occasion for ‘pub- crawl’ type reunions after the formalities. But for many of those that do, the result could be ‘The One Day of the Year’.
